International cargo exports from the Port of Tokyo amounted to 6.18 million tons in the first half (January-June) of 2019, down 5.5% year on year, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor. Imports, meanwhile, totalled 17.61 million tons, down 1.3%.
Looking at major import items, growth was obtained in auto mobile parts and components and recycled materials, which improved 5.2% to 780,000 tons and 9.2% to 300,000 tons. In contrast, industrial machinery decreased 8.1% to 900,000 tons, and recycled materials plunged 18.6% to 890,000 tons. As for imports, electrical machinery and metal products were brisk, with the former swelling 5.2% to 1.62 million tons and the latter rising 8.3% to 740,000 tons. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables plummeted 10.4% to 920,000 tons. Garments, other personal belonging and footwear declined 0.9% to 2.1 million tons.
Oceangoing containers (loaded and unloaded) amounted to 2.2 million TEUs in total, down 1.2%. Exports accounted for 1.03 million TEUs, up 0.4%, and imports, 1.17 million TEUs, down 2.6%.
