The recently commissioned eastern and western DFCs are together handling about 10% of the Indian Railways freight traffic. An average of 325 trains are operating on these DFCs on a daily basis, while their actual capacity is about 480 trains. The last leg of Western DFC that connects to JNPA is still under construction. Once it gets operational then traffic is expected to further surge on the DFCs.
Currently, the EDFC is fully operational and is moving about 200 trains per day whereas the WDFC is 93.2% complete and is accommodating 125 trains per day. In June 2024, Indian Railways’ (IR) originating freight loading stood at 135.46 million tonnes, registering a 10% growth over the same month last year. In June, these corridors carried a combined freight of more than 14 billion GTKM (gross tonne-kilometers) and 8.5 billion NTKMs (net tonne-kilometers) which was 150% higher than the corresponding month last year.
