71.23% work on NW-2 development completed on Brahmaputra River

The major components of the project on Brahmaputra river are construction of Bogibeel cargo terminal, construction of terminal at Jogighopa, development of approach road from Pandu Port Terminal to NH- 27.

Comprehensive development of National Waterway (NW)-2 on Brahmaputra River and NW-16 on Barak River is being carried out and the central government has already spent Rs 378.60 crore on NW-2 and Rs 24.26 crore on NW-16 until October 31, 2024.

The decision for development of the two major national waterways in Assam was taken by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. An amount of Rs 474 crore for the comprehensive development of NW-2 from Dhubri to Sadiya and Rs 148 crore for NW-16 (River Barak from Lakhipur to Tuker Gram) in Assam and Indian portion of the Indo-Bangladesh route in Assam was sanctioned by the Ministry.

The major components of the project on Brahmaputra river are construction of Bogibeel cargo terminal, construction of terminal at Jogighopa, development of approach road from Pandu Port Terminal to NH- 27 and development of Ship Repair Facility at Pandu, Guwahati (Assam) and fairway development. The physical progress of the NW-2 development work is calculated at 71.23%.

As to the project on comprehensive development of NW-16 & Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBP), the major components are “Construction of Terminal at Sonamura on Gumti river, Upgradation of Badarpur and Karimganj Terminals, Construction of Office building, and residential complex along with boundary wall in Silchar and Procurement of one Amphibian Dredger and Survey Vessel and fairway development.” The physical progress of the work is calculated at 16.39%.
