[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The longest container vessel till date at Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminals (DBGT), V. O. Chidambaranar Port, the SCI Mumbai, was handled at dawn on October 26, 2017 on trial basis.
It was berthed at 06.45 hours in the presence of I. Jeyakumar, IRTS, Chairman, V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, S. Natarajan, Deputy Chairman, Eric Lavenu, Chief Executive Officer, Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminals, and other senior officials of the Port Trust and DBGT.
SCI Mumbai, with overall length of 262 metres, has capacity to carry 4,395 TEUs. It is one of the vessels in the PIX 2 service, calling Tuticorin at a frequency of 28 days. The service rotation is: Tuticorin, Cochin, Jebel Ali, Mundra, Krishnapatnam, Kattupalli, Tuticorin.
Jeyakumar commented that earlier, vessels with overall length of 230 metres with capacity of 2,500 TEUs had been calling at the Port. This trial run of a much bigger vessel would pave the way to attracting more international and coastal volumes and would induce the main line operators offering services from the Far East, Red Sea and East Africa to call at the Port, he said. He added that these services would be the game-changer in container business in this part of the country, creating new opportunities and delivering cost-efficient services to customers.
