A delegation of nineteen members from the National Defence College which included senior stalwarts from the Indian civil and armed forces and also personnel from friendly foreign countries like Myanmar, USA Navy, Egypt and Sri Lanka, visited JNPT. The delegation is on an economic tour across the State, as part of their course, visiting key establishments with the objective to study different aspects connected to the development of the State. They visited JNPT as it is the number one container Port in India and a significant contributor to socio-economic development of the State and the country, at large.

JNPT is the premiere container Port in India and an interesting case study for the delegation because the Port operates in an environment where, the government, global maritime market and the community at large, all are an intricate part of the ecosystem. So here one can see large scale administrative acumen and implementation of very strategic approach to ensure growth and unison in the ecosystem. The delegates are already accustomed to such work environments and they could draw some inspiration from here, which will help them in their professional role ahead.

The delegation visited the Port to have an on-ground experiential tour of the Port-led-operations and the scale of business, at the Port. This was followed by an interactive session led by senior officers from JNPT, to appraise them about the role of JNPT in the economic scenario of the country and also its contribution towards the global markets. The discussion highlighted the steadfast growth trajectory of the Port, operational efficiency and various steps implemented to make business safe, economical and convenient for the EXIM community. The infrastructural developments underway, like the dedicated freight corridor which will make rail connectivity to Ports more viable and the development of Dry Ports which will allow the ports to connect with the hinterlands are significant steps which will accentuate the Ports and the maritime sector in India.

The National Defence College (NDC) is a pioneering institute of its type in Asia. The role of the college is providing joint training and instruction to senior service and civil officers related to strategic, economic, scientific, political and industrial aspects of national defence. It also helps future decision-makers with the necessary skills and background for filling senior positions in national security and associated fields. This visit was part of their course on ‘National Security and Strategic Studies.’
