V.O. Chidambaranar Port achieves new record in single day cargo handling & unloading

V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust (VOC Port) registered another new record by handling 1,89,395 tonnes of cargo in a single day on June 12, 2020, surpassing the earlier single day record of 1,80,597 tonnes on July 26, 2019, informed a release.

The major cargoes that contributed to the achievement were industrial coal (53,077 tonnes), thermal coal (45,829 tonnes), clinkers (13,217 tonnes), oil cake (4,000 tonnes), caustic soda lye (2,241 tonnes) and containerised cargoes (70,254 tonnes/3,903 TEUs).

The port also created a new record by unloading 55,363 tonnes of coal in 24 hours at Berth No. 9 from the vessel MV Green K Max S on June 12, surpassing the earlier record of 55,105 tonnes of coal handled at the same berth from the vessel MV Theoder Oldendroff on April 10, 2020.

The Liberian flagged vessel MV Green K Max S with length 229 metres, beam 32.26 metres and draught 14.20 metres arrived from Port of   Adang Bay, Indonesia with76, 285 tonnes of coal consigned for India Coke & Power Pvt. Ltd, Chennai.  The shipping agent for the vessel is Delta World Wide Shipping, Tuticorin and the stevedore agent Vilsons Shipping Pvt. Ltd, Tuticorin. Three harbour mobile cranes, operated by IMCOLA Crane Co., Tuticorin discharged 55,363 tonnes of coal.

Mr T. K. Ramachandran, IAS, Chairman, V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, while thanking all the stakeholders, officers and employees of the port who contributed towards achieving this synergistic record, conveyed that “international trade is more likely to remain below the levels handled during the last financial year and VOC Port is continuously striving to achieve improvement in overall performance of the port in order to attract more volume of cargo throughput”.
