As part of modernisation of Indian major ports, Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) installed VTMS-Vessel Traffic Management System at Port Signal Station-I (near Fishing Harbour).
Installed at a cost of Rs 1.75 crore, the main functional objective of VTMS is to ensure safe navigation of all vessel while navigating inside, outside channels, anchorage area, port limits, SBM (single buoy mooring) area and berthing area, thereby helping port authority/management for effective planning, scheduling and other business activities at par with international standards.
VPT chairman MT Krishna Babu inaugurated the VTMS, a release from VPT said, “On acquisition of the above system, safety of vessels increases through close surveillance with the help of integrated AIS (automatic identification system), radar, VHF and CCTV systems besides complying ISPS requirement. The port can closely monitor the vessels that are 20 nautical miles of the port harbour.”
The key feature of the new system is interfacing of vessel data such as ship arrivals, departures into port ERP (enterprise resource planning) system including the Port Operations Shipping (POS) system. Hence, vessel related information is updated automatically on real time basis without manual entry.
