Plans are afoot to launch Sri Lanka’s largest Agricultural Re-Export Zone near the Welipenna Sewa Piyasa on the Welipenna Southern Expressway in the Kalutara District.
This project is to be launched with the objective of transforming Sri Lanka to a leading centre for internationally exchanging trade goods.
A discussion on the construction of the Agricultural Re-Export was held on Tuesday (15) under the patronage of Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, Sports and Youth Affairs, Digital Technology and Enterprise Development Minister Namal Rajapaksa and Kalutara District Member of Parliament Anoopa Pasquel.
Last March, inspections and discussions were held under the leadership of the Trade Minister on constructing this centre close to the Welipenna Sewa Piyasa on the Welipenna Southern Expressway.
It has been planned to distribute products to the world through the Colombo Port using the Southern Expressway.
Trade Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardena said that the Agri-Products Trade Centre which is being built on 500 acres of land will become the largest agri-products exchange hub in South Asia.
The Minister also said that this will be transformed into an international market comprising factories, storage complexes and warehouse facilities. An opportunity will arise through this, where goods could be re-exported to countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka David Holly, Australian High Commission Officials and Trade Ministry Officials participated in the inspections and discussions held on June 15 at the Welipenna Sewa Piyasa.
