The Andhra Pradesh State Warehousing Corporation (APSWC) is planning to construct new warehouses in Visakhapatnam, Bhimavaram, Guntur and other places to augment the storage capacity, according to its Chairman LVSRK Prasad.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of a three-day training programme for the staff of the corporation on agri commodities warehousing practices. He said the storage capacity of the corporation at present amounted to a little over 6 lakh tonnes and “steps will be taken soon for doubling the capacity once the State government gives its approval. We have submitted the plans and the Nabard has come forward to sanction Rs342 crore for the purpose.”

He said agri-commodities are stored at present in private warehouses with a capacity of 5.5 lakh tonnes approximately and that is not sufficient. Warehouses with cold and dry storage facilities would be constructed here on 12 acres and the Union Commerce Ministry had agreed to sanction Rs100 crore. At Bhimavaram in West Godavari district, warehouses with modern facilities for storage of fish and aqua products would be built and at Guntur for storage of chilli.
