Visakhapatnam Port has expressed plans to increase cargo handling capacity from 2.3 million tonnes to 4.6 million tonnes, for which three berths are being upgraded and tenders for this infrastructure enhancement will be announced soon. Cargo movement at the port is continuously on the rise and the major port handled 10% more cargo in August, compared to previous year. Thermal coal movement at the port increased by 130%, steam coal by 60%, containerised goods by 10% and coking coal by 5%. The port is also trying to attract rice and coking coal cargo.
Berths 7 and 8 on the west quay will be upgraded to handle multiple cargo such as such as gypsum, manganese, bauxite, coking coal. Berth 7 on the east quay will handle fertiliser and multi cargo, it will be mechanised to suit such cargo requirements.
