Cargo transportation between the city-dock at Kolkata port and the national highway, which connects to states in the north and south of the country, would be speeded up thanks to an under-river road tunnel being planned for Hoogly River. The feasibility study will be awarded soon by the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP). An initiative like this might assist heavy vehicles not only get around city limits, but also cut down on the time it takes to get to the national highway. An under-river tunnel is part of the East-West Metro project that would connect Howrah and Kolkata across the Hooghly river. “As freight volumes grow in the future, we’ll be able to evacuate it from Kolkata to Howrah via a tunnel and link to the highway,” added the port Chairman.
