New Mangalore Port handled a largest parcel size container vessel this week. A statement by New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) said, the container vessel MV SM Neyyar, which was berthed in the port on July 23, sailed out on July 25.
In all, the port handled 1,936 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containers on this ship. This included 1011 TEUs of import The container traffic at New Mangalore Port Authority has steadily increased from less than 1000 teus handled in the year 2000 to 1.5 lakh teus in 2021-22. Till last financial year these containers were handled at various general cargo berths of the port. Considering the steady growth and to enable smooth handing of container vessels, the port has awarded the work for mechanisation of container handling at deep draft berth no14 to Mangalore Container Terminal Pvt Ltd.
