Syama Prasad Mookherjee Port aims to increase its cargo handling capacity by 26 per cent to 110 million tonnes by 2030, its Chairman P L Haranadh said on Wednesday. “We currently have a combined cargo handling capacity of 87 million tonnes. After all the investments worth Rs 950 crore which are under implementation and another Rs 2,400 crore worth of projects under pipeline are completed, our cargo handling capacity will touch 110 million tonnes,” he said.

Haranadh, who is the Chairman of Paradip Port, is now also holding the additional charge of the Kolkata port.

According to him, all the projects envisaged will be completed well within 2030.

The port had handled 42.87 million tonne in 2021-22 and in the current fiscal the port was expecting 65 million tonne.

Syama Prasad Mookherjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), also known as the Kolkata port, has two docks system under the port in Kolkata and Haldia.

The port said it will develop two land parcels in Nurpur and Moyapur both in South 24 Parganas district.

“These land parcels will be handed over to a PPP (Public Private Parternship) partner for resorts,” SMPK Deputy Chairman Samrat Rahi said.

He said night navigation which will be implemented in phases will commence in two to three months and will facilitate quick turnaround of ships.
