India-Italy to cooperate in industrial property rights

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, granted approval for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry India, and the Directorate General for the Protection of Industrial Property-Italian Patent and Trademark Office of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy of the Italian Republic. The MoU focuses on fostering cooperation in the realm of Industrial Property Rights.

This collaboration aims to bring about several advantages, including promotion of cooperation. The MoU will encourage and promote collaboration activities between the two participating entities in the areas of IP and information technology services.

The primary objective of the MoU is to provide support to enterprises, with a special emphasis on startups and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), in gaining access to and actively participating in both national and international Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) systems.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of the Republic of India and the Directorate General for the Protection of Industrial Property-Italian Patent and Trademark Office of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy of the Italian Republic holds several key objectives.

Firstly, the MoU is committed to simplifying procedures associated with the processing of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) applications. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility for enterprises, particularly startups and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), facilitating their engagement with national and international IPR systems.

Additionally, a pivotal focus of the agreement is to foster awareness about Intellectual Property Rights, ensuring that businesses are well-informed about the significance and intricacies of these rights. Moreover, the MoU sets out to encourage the commercialization of Intellectual Property, providing crucial support to businesses in leveraging and monetizing their IP assets. Lastly, the agreement emphasises the importance of strengthening the enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights, underscoring the commitment to creating a robust framework for the protection and utilisation of intellectual assets.

The collaborative efforts under the MoU will provide a platform for the exchange and dissemination of best practices, experiences, and knowledge in the field of Intellectual Property Rights. This will be facilitated through active participation in various programs and events, organised either individually or jointly by the participating entities.

The MoU underscores the commitment of both nations to enhance cooperation in the field of industrial property, fostering a conducive environment for innovation, protection, and commercialisation of intellectual assets.
