DP World Subcontinent, which has two terminals at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, said it is not charging shipping lines to use direct port delivery services meant to ease congestion and lower logistics costs at India’s busiest container gateway.

The company recently said both terminals were handling DPD cargo in line with a decree from Customs.

“As a global enabler of trade, we strive to add value to the trade. Our terminals are driven by its leadership in innovation to ensure efficiency and expertise in its operations,” DP World Nhava Sheva sources said recently.

The sources also said its officials maintain seamless coordination with the port and customs authorities to effectively implement the DPD program.

DP World Nhava Sheva, which includes Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal and Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal, has taken a lead role in speeding cargo flows and shoring up productivity over the past year and NSICT was the first to automate gate procedures.

“At DP World, we believe in providing world-class services to our customers with enhanced operational efficiency and by constantly re-engineering our processes,” DP World Subcontinent Senior Vice President and Managing Director Anil Singh said recently.

DPD essentially means import containers are delivered directly to pre-approved clients instead of waiting in a container freight station for customs clearance, which helps free up otherwise clogged yard space at ports.

JNPT’s private terminals have been pressing authorities for additional quayside storage space to efficiently handle DPD volumes, and that need was amply evidenced by recent congestion that forced container lines to temporarily suspend the acceptance of exports.

However, DPD and other measure have continued to fuel steady reductions in container dwell times at JNPT.
