The construction work at the port is progressing at its full pace. The road being developed to connect Pandu Port will be directly linked to the National Highway outside the city, to ensure the traffic of Guwahati city is not affected by heavy vehicles plying to move exim goods unloading from the port. As per A. Selva Kumar, Director of Inland Waterways Authority, the project construction cost is Rs 150 crore and will be done in 2 phases. At present, about 30% of the work has been completed, while the remaining will be completed by the end of this year.
Besides this, a ship repairing and maintenance services centre is also being developed in Guwahati by the Inland Waterways Authority. The repair facility will be used by all small and big ships coming to the Brahmaputra. This will save a lot of cost for shipowners who currently travel for longer distances for repair purposes. With this facility, the inconvenience and expense of taking North-Eastern ships to Kolkata Port for repairs can be avoided.
