In a historic milestone for India’s transportation sector, Assam is poised to witness the inauguration of the country’s first river terminal in Guwahati. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the project marks a significant step towards enhancing connectivity and stimulating regional economic growth.
Scheduled for inauguration on May 13, 2022, the Guwahati Gateway Ghat (GGG) represents a state-of-the-art river ferry terminal designed to revolutionize Assam’s waterways. Funded by the World Bank, the project underscores a concerted effort to leverage the natural resources of the Brahmaputra River for sustainable development.
The terminal, meticulously crafted by the Ports & Waterways teams in India, promises a blend of functionality and comfort. Boasting amenities such as cafes, a canteen, and accessibility ramps, the GGG aims to redefine the travel experience for passengers traversing the Brahmaputra’s currents. Located on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River, Guwahati serves as the largest metropolis in northeastern India. With its strategic positioning, the GGG is poised to serve as a crucial hub for transportation, catering to the needs of passengers from Guwahati and neighboring river access points, known as ‘ghats.’
The inauguration of the Guwahati Gateway Ghat heralds a new era of connectivity and accessibility for Assam, promising safe and enjoyable transportation along the river throughout the year. As the region prepares to embrace this transformative initiative, all eyes are on the GGG to chart a course towards a brighter, more connected future for the people of Assam.
