Growing from the current 6.24 million teus in FY24, JNPA aims to reach a throughput of 7 million teus in FY25. Unmesh Wagh, Chairman, JNPA, says this growth will largely be driven by the rise in exports which are now looking up after a dip in FY24. JNPA has noted a 7% year-on-year growth in exports compared to the 6% growth recorded in 2023-24, which indicates a rise in organic traffic. Pharmaceutical products, automobile parts, chemicals are the growth drivers.

By April 2025, JNPA will have a capacity of 10 million teus. The major port will start awarding tenders for Vadhavan Port by August as soon as the cabinet approves the project. In the first phase of construction, it is expected to handle 15 million teus which will grow to 23.2 million teus after the second phase is commissioned.

JNPA is also planning to handle certain amount of transhipment traffic. The major port has some capacity that can be utilised for transhipment, but yard capacity needs to be expanded for this function as containers will be held at the port as part of the transhipment traffic. Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal has come forward to take up these operations. At present about 1% of the cargo handled at JNPA is transhipment cargo, in a few years this can rise to make up 10-15 percent of cargo handled.
