MSC expands capacity as 2M Alliance nears its conclusion

This growth by MSC is not only in response to the growing market pressure, but also in response to the imminent end of the 2M Alliance.

In February 2025, the 2M Alliance will conclude the collaboration between MSC and Maersk. Before the alliance dissolves, MSC is focusing on increasing its individual operational services, as soon Maersk and Hapag Lloyd will be launching the Gemini Cooperation. Particularly, MSC has been focusing upon the Transpacific and Asia-Europe trades, increasing its market share in capacity served for standalone services.

This growth by MSC is not only in response to the growing market pressure, but also in response to the imminent end of the 2M Alliance. MSC is proactively developing its services ahead of the alliance’s termination, unlike Maersk. MSC’s move to boost standalone capacity share started before the Red Sea crisis, with their standalone services comprising about 9% of the deployed capacity in this trade lane since Q2 2023.
