MSC has built up a massive market share of 20% of the global container shipping industry, an all time high for the shipping line as well.

In the current year, the container shipping giant has added about 400,000 TEUs to its fleet. In July, the shipping line’s share of operational fleet rose to 19.8%, which is the highest ever capacity recorded by any carrier. Earlier, only Maersk had come close to dominating the market in a similar manner. Maersk’s market share peaked at 19.4% in 2018 but has decline in each of the five consecutive years since then.

MSC further has massive orders lined up, including six 19,000 TEU ships at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) and eight 11,500 TEU vessels at Penglai Zhongbai Jinglu Ship Industry (Jinglu), all to be LNG dual-fuelled. Earlier, MSC had booked a dozen 19,000 TEU LNG dual-fuelled ships at Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, taking its order book to 1.84 million TEUs.
