A “new star in India’s marine infrastructure,” averred PM Modi, as he inaugurated the Tuticorin Container Terminal. With its advanced infrastructure, strategic location, and robust connectivity, the terminal is set to play a transformative role in India’s maritime sector. By enhancing the capacity and efficiency of container handling on the East Coast, the terminal is expected to boost trade volumes, reduce transit times, and lower logistics costs for exporters and importers. It will also contribute to the economic development of the region by creating jobs and fostering greater integration into the global economy.
The Tuticorin Container Terminal is strategically located at the V.O. Chidambaranar Port on the southeast coast of India. This terminal, wholly owned and operated by Tuticorin International Container Terminal Private Limited (TICTPL), represents a significant investment in enhancing India’s port infrastructure and global trade capabilities. With its strategic position in the Gulf of Mannar, the terminal is poised to become a major hub for container traffic between India, Europe, and the USA, serving as a vital link in the global supply chain.
Construction and equipment installation at the terminal have progressed rapidly, with significant milestones achieved, including the arrival of the first shipment of cranes on June 8, 2024, and the second shipment on June 29, 2024. The terminal is designed to handle up to 720,000 TEUs annually. It features a 370-meter quay capable of accommodating large container vessels and a yard area capable of storing up to 8,814 TEUs. Additionally, the terminal offers 210 reefer slots for temperature-sensitive cargo.
Close to the East-West international sea route and positioned in the Gulf of Mannar, the port is naturally sheltered from storms and cyclone winds, providing an all-weather, 24/7 operational environment throughout the year. The terminal’s strategic location allows it to serve as a critical node for east-west coastal and EXIM trade, connecting major global trade routes such as the Australian, African, Suez, and Gulf routes. This advantageous positioning not only facilitates smooth and efficient maritime operations but also offers significant logistical benefits to a vast hinterland region, including the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.
The development of the Tuticorin Container Terminal is governed by a 30-year build, operate, and transfer (BOT) concession agreement signed on September 3, 2022, between the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) and Tuticorin International Container Terminal Private Limited (TICTPL). This agreement allows TICTPL to convert berth no. 9 at the V.O. Chidambaranar Port into a fully operational container terminal.
Connectivity and Hinterland Access
The Tuticorin Container Terminal is well-connected to major hinterland regions, ensuring seamless integration into the national and international supply chains. The port is linked by road, rail, and air to key industrial and commercial centers across South India. The six-lane outer ring road provides direct access to the V.O. Chidambaranar Port from all hinterlands, while 16 Container Freight Stations (CFSs) and 1 Inland Container Depot (ICD) are established within a 13-kilometer radius of the port. The terminal’s proximity to an international airport further enhances its connectivity and logistical efficiency.
