Thiruvananthapuram: Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has chosen to dock ships from two of its international shipping lines at Vizhinjam International Port, increasing the number of ships arriving there each week starting in February 2025. According to the corporation, Vizhinjam will be visited by its ships from the Dragon service, which connects Asia and the Mediterranean, and the Jade service, which connects Europe and Asia. The Dragon service ship on its eastward voyage will make a port call, while ships traveling in both ways will dock for the Asia-Europe commerce.

These ship services carry containers from important ports in the Asia region to Europe via the Middle East. The port is regularly used by the corporation. This is important because Adani Ports intends to handle export containers that can be shipped throughout the nation at Vizhinjam Port. Instead of making a detour to other ports in India, ships can now drop containers to India at Vizhinjam and then pick up containers for export from the port. A port official said this will be a weekly service, ensuring assured berthing at the port.

The facility can also be used by traders, particularly those in South India, to expedite the shipping of their goods to Europe. Since the testing started more than four months ago, the port has already handled 1.25 lakh cargo and 60 ships. This month is probably when the port will be formally put into service.
