The Directorate-General of Shipping has mandated the installation of CCTV systems on all Indian-flagged merchant vessels exceeding 500 gross tonnage. This move aims to enhance maritime safety and security by:

  • Improving Incident Response: CCTV footage will aid in investigations related to incidents like man-overboard, collisions, and casualties.
  • Facilitating Search and Rescue Operations: Real-time footage will provide crucial information to SAR agencies, enabling faster and more effective response.
  • Enhancing Security: CCTV systems will enhance overall security onboard vessels by deterring criminal activities and assisting in investigations.

The circular outlines requirements for CCTV installation, including 24/7 recording, 90-day data storage, and a centralized monitoring station. This directive underscores the government’s commitment to improving maritime safety standards and ensuring the well-being of Indian seafarers.
