Aggressively proceeding with port expansion plans and inviting global shipping lines to call at the south Indian port, Adani has expressed plans to double the investment in the transhipment mega port to $2.4 billion by 2028. The port capacity will also be ramped up five-fold to 5 million teus. This is an upgrade over the initial plan to grow the capacity to 3 million teus by 2045. The focus is on expanding the share in global maritime trade.
The proximity to international shipping routes that account for 30% of global cargo traffic, and a natural channel that goes as much as 24 meters (79 feet) below the sea makes Vizhinjam an ideal hub for some of the biggest ships to call in.
