July 19, 2020: The Land Port Authority of India has begun arranging for facilities to handle the first formal marine consumer cargo consignment that will arrive Akhaura ICP by road from Chittagong Port through road on July 26. The trial container ship from Kolkata Port to Chittagong Port was digitally flagged off by Union minister of state for shipping Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday.
However, the small cargo vessel from Haldia to Sonamura jetty via river Meghna of Bangladesh, which was scheduled to reach on Saturday has been postponed. This is the first Indian consignment coming to Assam and Tripura from Chittagong and Mongla Ports.
The regular consignment through waterways of Bay of Bengal via Bangladesh would enter Sabroom in South Tripura from Chittagong port, covering a surface distance of 70 kilometre, once bridge construction over River Feni and road development work up to Ramgarh of Southern Bangladesh is completed by this year.
