APM Terminals has announced that all its European facilities are now running on renewable electricity in line with the company’s “green” goals.

Following the switch to green electricity in APM Terminals Aarhus in Denmark in early 2022, all European APM Terminals facilities are now able to run on green electricity.

More specifically, APM Terminals does not only change its equipment so that it moves with electricity, but at the same time, it supplies only green or non-green electricity.

Therefore, the global port operator will reduce its emissions in Scope 2, ie the emissions resulting from the production of electricity required to power its electrical terminal equipment.

“Renewable electricity means electricity generated using, for example, hydropower, or wind & solar energy,’ explains APM Terminals in its statement.

As a result, the total emission reduction is 52 kilotons of CO2, which is equal to 9% of the total Emissions of the port operator compared to the reference year of 2020.

Outside Europe, APM Terminals Pipavav in India has signed a contract to supply 40% of its electricity demand from wind and solar power through an Offsite Power Purchase Agreement with Cleanmax, while it has also commissioned a solar PV installation of 1 MW.

“In our industry electrification is one of the most effective levers to reduce emissions. But we need to make sure this happens in a transparent manner, by purchasing electricity that truly comes from renewable sources – otherwise, it is just ‘pollution in disguise’,” said APM Terminals. It is also important to note the company aims to achieve net zero emissions at its controlled terminals worldwide by 2040 and a 70% overall reduction in emissions by 2030.
