The Andhra Pradesh (AP) state cabinet is set to review plans for a captive port in Anakapalle district, aiming to enhance economic growth and streamline logistics. This announcement was made by Vangalapudi Anitha, Minister in Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s cabinet, via the X platform.
ArcelorMittal, in collaboration with Nippon Steel under the joint venture AM/NS India, is set to establish a captive port in the Anakapalle district of Andhra Pradesh. This initiative, which aligns with the state’s focus on boosting economic development and enhancing logistical efficiency, comes alongside plans for an integrated steel plant. The plant is expected to have a total production capacity of 24 million metric tonnes per year and involves a significant investment of ₹1.47 lakh crore.
The proposed port will feature 17 berths, developed in two phases with an overall investment of ₹11,198 crore, and aims to handle 20.5 MMPTA in the initial phase. The project is projected to create around 8,000 jobs.
According to officials, the steel plant’s location in Nakkapalle is strategic, benefiting from its coastal proximity, connection to NH-16, a rail link to the Chennai Grand Trunk, and access to water from the Polavaram Left Main Canal. The first phase of the plant will yield 7.3 million metric tonnes of stainless steel annually, with future expansion to reach the full production capacity. This development highlights the steel sector’s potential to become a major employment generator, second only to the textile industry in the region.
