Four business entities have been granted 3400 acres of land by the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) to establish green hydrogen production facilities close to Gujarat’s Kandla port, capable of producing 5.5 million tonnes annually.
According to the National Green Hydrogen Mission, this port is one of three that have been designated as green hydrogen hubs. Four companies have been given land: Larsen & Toubro Green Energy Tech Ltd, Welspun New Energy Ltd, AM Green Hydrogen Pvt Ltd, and Reliance Green Hydrogen and Green Chemicals Ltd.
According to plans disclosed, these enterprises are anticipated to establish a capacity of approximately 5.5 million tonnes annually for the production of green ammonia by 2030–31, according to Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of the Deendayal Port Authority.
Reliance received 900 acres, AM Green received 450 acres, Welspun received 150 acres, and L&T received 1900 acres. “The produced green hydrogen and its byproducts, such as methanol and green ammonia, will be exported and utilized as a substitute fuel bunker for future vessels.” The Central government has designated Tuticorin and Paradip as the other two ports that will be developed as hydrogen hubs in addition to Kandla.
In order to meet the water needs of the proposed green hydrogen units at Kandla, the port is also constructing a 300 MLD, or million liters per day, desalination facility. The DPA Chairman stated that the port has already submitted an Expression of Interest (EoI) for a 300 MLD desalination facility. Nine gigawatts of electricity will be needed for these green hydrogen plants. For these units, the businesses will source sustainable energy.
In addition, the DPA and NTPC inked a Memorandum of Understanding earlier this week for the establishment of a hydrogen plant at Kandla. At Kandla, this hydrogen will be utilized to power hydrogen-powered buses. Eleven hydrogen buses will be in service, and they will bill by the kilometer from Kandla. By August 2025, these buses should be operational, Singh stated.
