Bangladesh Prime Minister urges EU to extend GSP-plus facility for six years

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the European Union (EU) to extend its business facilities, particularly the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), for a duration of six years.

This request aims to provide support to developing nations, including Bangladesh, as they work towards improving their economies, especially in the wake of the economic challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

AK Abdul Momen, the Foreign Minister, conveyed the Prime Minister’s statement during a press briefing.

The extension of business facilities is seen as crucial for smoothing the transition of least developed countries (LDCs), like Bangladesh, towards economic prosperity after their graduation from the LDC status.

These remarks came following the Prime Minister’s bilateral discussions with leaders from the European Commission (EC), the European Union Bank (EIB), and the European Parliament. During her visit to Brussels, Belgium, where she arrived recently and participated in nine events, including the opening plenary session of the Global Gateway Forum and various side events, which featured further bilateral talks.

Notable meetings were held with key figures such as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trade Commissioner and Executive Vice President of the EC Valdis Dombrovskis, Commissioner for Crisis Management of the EC Janez Lenarcic, Vice-President of the European Parliament Nicola Beer, European Investment Bank President Werner Hoyer, and Commissioner for International Partnerships of the EC Jutta Urpilainen.
