Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) took a leap in domestic cargo operations with the launch of a 2.4 lakh-sqft domestic cargo terminal (DCT). KIA operator Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) said this is India’s largest greenfield domestic cargo terminal in terms of designed capacity. BIAL will operate the terminal in collaboration with Menzies Aviation. With enhanced infrastructure and streamlined processes, the DCT strengthens supply chains, connects industries and fosters innovation.

Spread over 7 acres, the terminal has a peak handling capacity of 3.6 lakh tonnes, with the potential to scale up to 4 lakh tonnes. It features 42 truck docks, 400 specially designed cargo bins, conveyors integrated with X-ray machines, and 30 ULD (unit loading device) build-up and breakdown stations.

Equipped with cutting-edge digital solutions, including real-time shipment tracking, data analytics, and enhanced communication systems, the DCT streamlines operations, improves timelines, and reduces human touchpoints. Digital integration facilitates data exchange with airline systems, enhancing visibility across the supply chain.

Already a premier hub for perishables, KIA is India’s largest exporter of mangoes, coriander, and other perishable goods. The new DCT further strengthens its leadership in air cargo. It also includes dedicated storage areas for specialised cargo, such as valuables, vulnerable items, live animals, dangerous goods, and radioactive materials.
