A similar programme was earlier shelved but the Shipping Ministry has requested the Finance Ministry to reconsider the scheme with slight modifications.
The quantum of the new PLI scheme has been halved to Rs 5,000 crore from Rs 11,000 crore earlier, and the tenure of the scheme has also been cut to three years from nine years earlier. A high level committee has been set up to promote domestic manufacturing of containers by 2026. Growing trade from India to Europe and Americas will propel the demand for containers in the years to come. With the Chinese market slowing down, India has an opportunity to boost domestic container manufacturing through the PLI scheme.
