The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has signed off on the proposal to appoint Captain Binesh Kumar Tyagi as the new chairman and managing director of Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI).

The appointment is for five years from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or till the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest, according to an office order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on Thursday.

Captain B K Tyagi was picked by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), the government’s head-hunter, to be the next CMD of SCI, after interviewing three candidates on 4 February this year.

Captain Tyagi is currently the director looking after the liner and passenger services division at SCI which is in the process of being privatised by the government.

Captain Tyagi graduated from Meerut University and joined SCI in 1990 as a trainee nautical officer and sailed on board various ships in different ranks including as master. In 2004, he came onshore and served in the technical, vetting, chartering and fleet personnel departments.

The Shipping Corporation of India has been functioning without a full-time chairman and managing director from 1 June this year.

Atul Ubale, the Director looking after the bulk carrier and tankers division of Shipping Corporation of India, was given the additional charge of chairman and managing director of the national flag carrier for three months from 1 June.
