Buoyed by pickup in demand the 12 major ports saw the cargo traffic rise by 4.77% to 679.35 million tonnes during FY18. These ports had handled 648.39MT of cargo during FY17.
Increased demand from coal, containers, fertilizers and POL was the main reason behind the growth in traffic.
Coking coal volumes handled by the major ports increased by 8.62% to 50.59MT during the last fiscal while container volumes rose by 8.08%.
Fertilizer volumes saw a growth of 7.22% during the fiscal.
Kandla Port handled the highest traffic volume at 110.09MT during FY18, followed by Paradip Port (102.01MT), JNPT(66MT), Vizag(63.53MT) and Mumbai Port(62.82MT).
