Carrier capacity crunch pushes air freight rates in Bangladesh

Due to passenger shortage, a Middle East-based airline with a significant share in moving passenger and cargoes from Dhaka, has nearly halved its number of daily flights to and from Bangladesh.

Increase in air cargo volumes specially during the recent students agitation led crisis in Bangladesh which had impacted movement of cargo by sea and land ports has seen air freights jump drastically. According to freight forwarders, there are no regular freighter services for moving goods from Bangladesh, so air shipment mainly depends on cargo hold of passenger planes. The movement of passengers from Dhaka to different destinations has declined following the political upheaval due to which airlines have squeezed their number of flights and have cut down on capacity to make business cost effective.
