The Chabahar port in Iran is likely to be inaugurated this Sunday (December 3, 2017) following the completion of the first phase of work, it is learnt.

India had got involved in the development of the port after the trilateral agreement for Establishment of International Transport and Transit Corridor was signed during Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi’s visit to Iran in May 2016.

India sees connectivity to Chabahar as an alternate route for trade and transit to and from Afghanistan and the wider Central Asia region, avoiding Pakistan which has blocked the land transit to Afghanistan. In fact, a month back India had operationalised Chabahar port by sending the first consignment of wheat from Kandla Port to Chabahar, which was then taken by road to Afghanistan.
