Chennai Port, in its endeavour to retain the status of the Gateway Hub of South India, continues with the expansion of its facilities. In order to cater to the dynamics of the changing service products offered by shipping lines in the wake of consolidation and alliance restructuring globally, Chennai Port has undertaken the task of further deepening the alongside depth at CCTPL. This exercise was to offer a facility at par with global standards. The Port increased the permissible draught at CCTPL container terminal to facilitate the handling of vessels with draught requirements up to 15 metres, thereby meeting the needs of the exim trade.
On January 7, 2017 Chennai Port achieved yet another landmark by berthing CMA CGM BELLINI, having a draught of 14.6 m, at the CCTPL terminal. The dredging facilitated by the Port Trust enabled this accomplishment, in the process allowing the Port’s two container terminals viz. CCTPL and CITPL, to accommodate ships of draught up to 15 metres. This has again proved the Port’s capabilities in modernisation and focusing on the needs of customers to cope with the requirements of international maritime trade, and improvising strategies for competing in the global trade by boosting economies of scale and through expansion.
The accrued benefits to the shipping lines include ability to deploy large vessels, thereby reducing the operating cost and further benefiting Chennai’s exim trade.
