The Chennai Port has increased its docking capabilities and currently has become the deepest port for container ships in India with draft of up to 15.5 metres amongst major ports, said Chennai Port Trust chairman Cyril C George. Krishnapatnam Port, which is capable of handling 75 million tonnes of cargo per annum, is the deepest port of India with a draft of 18.5 metres. With increasing competition from the five neighbouring ports of Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Karaikal, Kamarajnagar and Kattupalli – Chennai Port saw a 4.7% decrease to 50.06 million tonnes during 2015-16, down from 52.54 million tonnes the previous fiscal.
