According to Sunil Paliwal, Chairman of the Chennai Port Authority, the elevated corridor from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal will become a reality, helping to relieve traffic congestion and providing a lifeline for the port. Each tier of the two-layer elevated corridor is meant to contain two lanes.
He predicted that Chennai Port would be commercially viable for at least a few more decades, and that a long-term mission of development work will be undertaken. Six development projects would be carried out within the port in addition to the elevated corridor project, including the construction of bunker berths, the development of goods sheds, the creation of a buffer parking yard, direct reception entry, electrification of railway lines, and the landmark construction of a multimodal logistics park. He further informed that development of common user marine liquid terminal, container terminal of Phase 1 (Stage 2), IOCL captive jetty, RO-RO (Roll on/Roll off) cum general cargo berth and dredging operation in the port would be taken up. The other big projects being executed by the NHAI include the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway, elevated corridor between Maduravoyal and Sriperumbudur, trumpet flyover project at Irungattukottai, the Madurai Ring Road and the Chennai-Salem Expressway.
