With a view to increase revenues from freight, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) and Container Corporation of India ltd ( CONCOR ) intend to jointly set up and operate a container depot at Balli in South Goa. KRCL intends to utilize land that it already owns at Balli to build a full-fledged container depot that can stock, load and unload containers.
The depot will have two railway lines linking the depot to the Konkan Railway grind and thus to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) at Mumbai. KRCL will invest 30 crore in the project and intends to run a freight train daily on the route. “Construction will begin after the monsoon. It will save time as once customs clearance is given in Goa, the container will directly be sent to the ship at JNP. It will reduce delays,” KRCL chairman and managing director Sanjay Gupta said.
