The Dahod railway workshop in Vadodara, which is almost a century old, will now start producing and exporting electric locomotives that will move freight trains in India and abroad. Currently the workshop is used for overhauling the rolling stock of Western Railways. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon lay the foundation stone that will transform the workshop into a manufacturing unit. The new facility will come up at an investment of Rs.20,000Cr. It will manufacture 1200 high horsepower locomotives for broad guage Indian locomotives and the standard guage for export. A technology partner for engine manufacturing will be selected through a bidding process.

The 9000 horsepower electric locomotives manufactured at the facility will be capable of higher haulage capacity and higher speed for freight trains. they will have a capacity for pulling 4500 tonnes of cargo at a maximum speed of 120kmph.
