Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal augmenting infrastructure

Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal (DBGT), at V. O. Chidambaranar Port, has received the first shipment of 2 quay cranes last week. The Liebherr cranes, with twin lift spreaders, will handle container vessels with beam of 17 rows across (47 m outreach).

The second shipment, comprising 1 quay crane and 9 eRTGCs, is expected at the beginning of May 2017, said a release.

A total of 3 quay cranes with twin lift spreaders and 9 eRTGCs is to be installed and operational at DBGT before August 2017.

The terminal now handles container vessels with 3 mobile harbour cranes and ships’ gears, having achieved a throughput of 2,76,955 TEUs since May 2014 till date. The average GCR was 17.8 moves/hour with mobile harbour cranes and 15.2 moves/hour with ships’ gears.

The volume growth recorded by the terminal in fiscal 2016-17 was 9 per cent, with the regular service of PIX2, Smile and BOX feeder vessels.

Civil works for Phase II yard construction, sub-station, operation admin building, quay side railing and Navis N4 (TOS) implementation is in progress, the release added.
