DGFT Sets New Guidelines for Halal Meat Exports

DGFT said that specified meat and meat products will be allowed to be exported as halal certified to 15 countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has notified policy conditions for export of certain halal meat and its products which will come into effect from October 16. The guidelines cover fresh and frozen meat of bovine animals, sheep and goat.

DGFT said that specified meat and meat products will be allowed to be exported as halal certified to 15 countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh, only if such goods are produced or processed and/or packaged in a facility certified under the ‘India Conformity Assessment Scheme (I-CAS) – Halal’ of the Quality Council of India (QCI). Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Philippines, Qatar, Singapore and Turkey are also among the 15 countries.

The commerce and industry ministry had last year said that all meat and meat products are to be exported as ‘halal certified’ only if they’re produced, processed and packed under a valid certificate issued by a certification body accredited by a board of the Quality Council of India
The global halal food market was $1.97 trillion in 2021 and is projected to reach $3.9 trillion by 2027. Halal certification is given by many private companies in India which marks the food or products permissible.
