Keeping in view an increase in the cargo movement, the airport authority is constructing a new domestic cargo terminal at Raja Bhoj airport. It is proposed to be inaugurated with the beginning of the year 2023, said officials. The authority is spending around Rs eight cr on the construction of the terminal which is being built in an area of about four acres.
Four years ago, the authority had established a cargo terminal in Bhopal. Only a part of the old airport terminal was converted into a cargo terminal. Its annual capacity is only 3000 metric tonnes. Due to increase in inward and outward movement of goods, the need for its expansion was being felt, said officials. The new terminal is being constructed near the old airport building. Its capacity is 29, 300 metric tonnes annually.
The authority has decided to fully equip the under-construction cargo terminal with CCTV cameras from the point of view of security. From the point of view of security, many modern security equipment including X-ray machine and explosive trace detector will be installed here.
The baggage will be thoroughly checked before being loaded onto the aircraft. The cargo unit will be operated by the Airport Authority of India’s subsidiary company Cargo Logistics & Allied Services. The domestic cargo terminal will start functioning after getting security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. The authority has applied for this. The target is to complete the work by the last week of December. It will be inaugurated in January 2023, said officials.
