  • Four logistics companies won the bid for 5 routes
  • 1600 importers to benefit from the system
  • JWC Logistics (2 routes), Vora Transfreight, Royal Translines and Ekta Enterprises are the successful bidders

JNPT, has been working on an innovative and out of box transport solution to achieve seamless and faster movement of DPD cargo from the port to the respective destinations of the cargo.
With a view to usher this process in a very transparent and scientific manner, JNPT had floated transport tenders in August 2017 which received excellent response with 12 leading logistics companies submitting their bids. After technical bids and detailed presentation by bidders, four companies have won the bid for 5 routes which will transport the cargo from JNPT to different parts of the country. About 1600 importers who have opted for DPD mode of transport will benefit from this process.

DPD is increasingly being accepted as the optimal way of transporting the cargo directly from the Port to the importer and today accounts for close to 39 per cent of the total cargo traffic from JNPT.

The first meeting of 4 successful bidders who have won mandate for 5 routes – from JNPT to Gujarat, to Goa and Bengaluru, to Nashik, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Indore and Hyderabad, to Ahmednagar and to local region in and around Mumbai was held at JNPT on 5th April.
The proposed model paves the way for transforming logistics for the port. Due to multiple transporters working on each route, there was no synergy in operations. The idling of TTs were congesting the entire process. The import laden container truck that travelled to the importer had to wait for 2-3 days to bring back the empty container to the port ecosystem. On the other hand, for exports, the truck had to carry empty container from the port to the exporter and wait for 2-3 days to come back with the export laden container. The idling time was a waste of cost and resources.

Now with single operator, the import laden TTs after dropping off the containers can connect with their transporters and pick up export laden containers or drop empty containers to exporters on their return journey. This will further help in repositioning of empty container on the route. Each importer handling TT will return with export laden container, reducing the unproductive shift of empty containers to container yard to the port area. The optimum utilization of TTs will reduce load on road and reduction in tariff.
In future an exporter or importers will be able to book his cargo sitting in his office irrespective of the type and quantity, through a technology backed platform. It can transform to a new transport sector uber like model of the future.
Overall this new transport solution backed by robust technology brings ultimate efficiency like
• Easy Co-ordination with Port and customers
• Promotes end to end delivery model
• Faster evacuation of containers from the Port Area
• 24X7 Vehicle tracking
• Container  Tracking through  mobile
• 24×7 Customer service

Reviewing the progress of the transport solution, Shri Neeraj Bansal, Chairman-in-charge, JNPT said, “JNPT is proud to introduce a very optimal transport solution despite design challenges and the new system will bring in substantial reduction in time and cost and function in a fully transparent manner.”

This is really an EXIM-Trade friendly solution which will provide end-to-end transport solution and has to be implemented in a seamless and defined way. The logistics companies have to coordinate and successfully roll out the system from May 1, 2018, Shri Bansal said.

Nearly 1600 importers are availing the DPD mode of transport and these importers will realise the price of transporting cargo in a very transparent and efficient manner that would result in substantial saving of time and cost of transport, Shri Bansal said.

Representatives of all four successful bidders, officials from JNPT, customs authorities and officials of various terminals were present at the meeting to take stock of the preparedness for the roll out of the new system without any hitch from May.

Speaking about the benefits of the new system, one of the successful bidder Ms. Kruti Jobanputra, Director, JWC Logistics said, this will greatly convenience the trading community and will also result in digitised processes resulting in higher efficiency at reduced costs.
