The ambitious Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) project has now been linked directly to Bihar after inauguration of the 137km-long route connecting Pt Deen Dayal Upadhaya Junction (DDU) to Sonenagar by PM Narendra Modi on Friday. The 1875 km route of the EDFC corridor passes through at least 11 stations of the state falling under jurisdiction of the East Central Railway (ECR).
According to ECR CPRO Birendra Kumar, commissioning of the EDFC is likely to give an impetus to freight loading as goods trains carrying coal and other materials will have a separate dedicated track to move faster with the consignments. “The huge traffic load on the Patna-Delhi and Patna-Howrah mainline route will be thus lessened as goods trains will move faster on the newly built route,” he said adding both passenger and goods trains were moving on the same tracks earlier.
