Eastern Railway (ER) has set an ambitious target of transporting 100 million tonne of cargo by 2024.
ER general manager Arun Arora said, “In 2021-22, ER had managed to achieve the highest ever freight loading at 76.1 million tonne and ER is expecting to load 85 million tonne during the ongoing 2022-23.”
ER is the first zonal railway across India to commission the first Gati Sakti Cargo Terminal at Maithon within the Asansol division to proliferate goods traffic transportation by improving speed and mobility, reducing logistic cost, and enhancing capacity.
Significantly, Indian Railways has planned to develop 100 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals (GCTs) till 2025 out of which 22 GCTs have already been commissioned pan-India. GCTs are planned to be developed either on railway land or non-railway land and the GCT operator for the construction and operation of the terminal is being selected through an open tendering process. In a step forward towards that direction, ER has now commissioned the 2nd Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal at Pakur on Monday.
