One of the two new 132-meter high-voltage pylons near the Kallo lock in the Port of Antwerp was finished by Elia, Belgium’s electrical grid operator.

In order to get the port ready for the energy transition, the Brabo III high-voltage line is being renewed. As part of the Brabo III project, Elia will construct fifty-eight new pylons between Liefkenshoek (Beveren) and Mercator (Kruibeke).

It is anticipated that this line, which is among the most significant in the nation, would be completely renewed by the summer of 2026 after being progressively replaced for a while. The two tallest pylons are ten meters higher than Antwerp Cathedral.

Elia stressed that upgrading the Brabo III line from 150 kV to 380 kV is essential to strengthen Belgium’s electrical grid. The growing demand for electricity in the Port of Antwerp will also be addressed by these initiatives.

Additionally, the renovated line will facilitate energy exchanges with the Netherlands and better disperse electrical flows, according to Elia.

The last stage of the Brabo program, which began in 2015, is called Brabo III. The project entails building a high-voltage loop around the port region of Antwerp.

The region will have supply security thanks to the new high-voltage lines, which will boost the capacity of electricity transmission by 20% as compared to the previous ones.
