One of India’s leading private port operators, Essar Ports, has recorded a cargo handling volume of 36.5 million tonnes for the nine months ending December 2020, led by demand from the power and steel industries. The company handled 12.7 million tonnes in the third quarter of the 2020/21 financial year up from 12.6 million tonnes in the second.
Rajiv Agarwal, chief executive and managing director, says, “Our growth trajectory has continued despite facing several challenges during the entire year. Our cargo handling performance over the nine months is testament to how ports play a pivotal role in keeping economic engines running. We look forward to a post Covid era now that India embarks upon one of the largest vaccination drives of the world. We expect a bounce back in the economy and revival of demand in next few months.”
Essar Ports specialises in the development and operation of ports and terminals handling dry and liquid bulk, break bulk and general cargo. It has four operational terminals in India, one each in Hazira and Salaya on the west coast, and in Visakhapatnam and Paradip on the east coast. The current combined operational capacity of these terminals is 110 million tonnes annually.
