For the first time, a commercial vessel carrying imported molasses from Pakistan has docked at Mongla Port. The Panama-flagged MT Dolphin 19 arrived at Jetty No 8 with 5,500 tons of molasses after a 15-day journey from Pakistan. Departing from Karachi Port on January 22, 2024, it reached Mongla port. Upon unloading, part of the cargo will be stored at Mongla’s United Refinery and Bulk Storage Limited, while the rest will be transported by rail to Baghabari, Sirajganj, for distribution to feed companies.
Mongla Port has been expanding its operations, facilitating its first-ever garment exports on July 28, 2022, and importing frozen fruits on December 12, 2023. In the first seven months of the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the port handled 496 foreign vessels, processing 6.56 million tons of goods. This included 12,083 TEUs of containers from 23 container ships and 6,751 reconditioned vehicles from 12 car carriers. At the start of 2025, ship arrivals at Mongla Port increased, with 83 foreign vessels docking in January, up from 76 in the same month of 2024.
As a key economic hub in southwestern Bangladesh, Mongla Port plays a crucial role in trade and employment, handling imports such as food grains, cement clinker, fertilizers, machinery, coal, and LPG, while exporting shrimp, jute products, frozen food, and other goods.
