Foreign operators to be invited to develop Bangladeshi ports

Bangladesh plans to open its seaports to foreign port and terminal operators, it is learnt. This comes amidst increasing calls to enhance port capacity following the ongoing severe congestion at the country’s key Chittagong port (handling 92 per cent of Bangladesh’s exports and imports) which has been impacting its international trade for some time now.

Under a new landlord port arrangement, international firms will design, build, finance, operate and maintain new port terminals. The country’s biggest port, Chittagong, will withdraw from dock management and become a landlord
